LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – A competency hearing has been scheduled for the man accused of stabbing multiple persons near the UNLV campus, killing two women.
According to court documents, a preliminary hearing set on Tuesday has been canceled because Christopher Martell’s case has been turned over to Clark County District Court.
A competency hearing has been rescheduled on November 4.
After a series of stabbings at Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway, Martell was arrested on suspicion of two charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Martell is accused of killing 57-year-old Jody Devrieson on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and 74-year-old Mary Miller on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
On Wednesday, Sept. 21, he stabbed a third homeless woman while she was wheeling a fellow in a wheelchair. Her status was characterized as serious but stable at the moment.
According to an arrest report, the woman in the Sept. 21 instance received a cut to her left arm and knife wounds to her chest and neck. The man in the wheelchair was also stabbed twice in the back and had a huge cut on the back of his head.
Martell was stopped and detained by an officer patrolling the area after he matched a suspect description based on security video from the area. As he surrendered, he allegedly threw a huge knife with an 8- to 10-inch blade in a plastic sheath into the ground.
According to the report, detectives interviewed Martell, but he refused to answer any of their inquiries, stating only that “he was an operator with the CIA and could not discuss what he did.”
