A Las Vegas man accused of attempting to rob a bank using a bomb threat claimed that President-elect Donald Trump directed him to carry out the act, according to police documents.
The incident occurred on Monday, Nov. 18, just before 10 a.m., when officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a reported robbery at a bank on Rainbow Boulevard near Smoke Ranch Road.
According to an arrest report, a man handed a teller a note demanding $5,000 in large bills and threatening to “blow something up.” Bank staff alerted authorities, prompting a sweep of the area for explosive devices.
During the investigation, a man matching the suspect’s description approached officers, identified himself as the perpetrator, and asked to be arrested. Police later identified him as 55-year-old Irving Martinez.
While being taken into custody, Martinez reportedly made erratic statements, admitting to the attempted robbery and claiming, “Donald Trump told him to do this.”
Further questioning revealed Martinez was frustrated because he could not access funds from his overdrawn bank account. According to the teller, Martinez attempted to withdraw money but became irate when the transaction was declined. He then handed over the threatening note before leaving the bank without obtaining any money.
Martinez now faces charges of burglary, communicating a bomb threat, and attempted robbery. He is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on a $40,000 bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for Dec. 5.
