Mattel Apologizes for Adult Website Misprint on “Wicked” Doll Packaging

Los Angeles, CA – Toy giant Mattel has apologized for a blunder on the packaging of its “Wicked” dolls, a merchandise line inspired by the upcoming film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical. The error involved a misprinted website link that directed consumers to an adult website instead of the movie’s official website.

The mishap occurred over the weekend when social media users pointed out the discrepancy. While the packaging intended to link to WickedMovie.com, the printed address mistakenly led to Wicked Pictures, an adult film company.

“We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this,” Mattel stated in a press release. The company confirmed that the misprint affected the “Wicked” doll collection, primarily sold in the U.S., which features character dolls of Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) in the film.

The news follows the highly anticipated film’s premiere on Saturday at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The movie, directed by John M. Chu, is set for release on November 22nd and boasts a star-studded cast, including Erivo, Grande, and the original Broadway leads, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.

Following the discovery of the misprint, Mattel initiated the removal of the “Wicked” doll line from retail shelves. Target, one of Universal’s retail partners for the film, confirmed this action, while similar efforts were underway at other major retailers like Walmart, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“We advise parents that the misprinted website is not appropriate for children,” Mattel emphasized. “Consumers who already have the dolls are advised to discard the packaging or obscure the incorrect link. They can also contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”
