Is Gift Packaging Recyclable?

RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – Most individuals have more garbage than normal around the holidays, or is it recycling?

Waste Management in Reno reports a 25% increase in volume as vehicles bring in more undesirable things.

“When people are shopping, when they are celebrating with their families they’re sending us their recyclables,” said Mickey Eckman, the Material Recovery Facility Manager.

Eckman has been a Waste Management employee for 15 years, and every Christmas season, she sees items that should not be in a recycling container.

“We start seeing Christmas lights, Christmas ribbons from packaging,” Eckman said.

“We see Christmas trees, baby diapers, batteries.”

Eckman warns against too flamboyant gift wrap and ribbons. They are usually sparkly or glittery.

“It needs to be like the plain kind of unexciting gift wrap,” she explained.

Otherwise, it should be thrown away.

According to Eckman, while there is more contamination over the holidays, most individuals who recycle have good intentions.

“People who do what we call wish-cycling, so they wish it was recyclable, so they put it in the bin and they send it to us and unfortunately, that’s a pretty hard thing for us to deal with,” Eckman said.

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful will begin collecting trees on December 26th at several places around Washoe County.

Trees, on the other hand, can be discarded alongside a garbage can.

“Make sure that you put it in there loosely or you do cut it, bag, box or bundle it and put it next to the container with a sticker,” said Kendra Kostelecky, a spokesperson for Waste Management.

Every household customer is also entitled to discard waste at Waste Management facilities four times per year.
