LAS VEGAS- The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released body camera video of the events leading up to the deadly shootout that killed a man fleeing officers.
Officer Tierney Tomburo fired four shots while on the ground.
The footage shows her firing shots after Gabriel Charles shot her in the leg.
According to police, Charles was in a car with two other males when they were stopped.
Officer Tomburo and her partner motioned for them to leave and return to their patrol unit.
Charles appears to obey at first, but then flees.
Tomburo instantly pursues him, then Charles turns with a gun and fires one round, striking Officer Tomburo in the pelvis.
According to police, officers have a foot pursuit guideline that governs how and when they chase someone.
Because she was so close to Charles, it was standard procedure for her to pursue him.
Officer Tomburo has been commended by the department for her actions.
“She’s a great example of a hero police officer. She showed her courage, she showed calm under pressure, and I think she did an amazing job. We’re all proud of her,” said LVMPD Assistant Sheriff John McGrath.
If Charles had lived, he would have faced a number of crimes, including attempted murder of an officer.
In the case of the two guys in the automobile, the driver was detained for DUI while the other passenger was freed.
