In a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by those who wear the badge, a North Las Vegas police officer was killed in the line of duty Tuesday afternoon following a shootout with an armed suspect. The incident, which occurred near Lone Mountain and Camino Al Norte, has left the community and law enforcement agencies across the valley grappling with the loss of one of their own.
The officer, whose name has not yet been released, responded to reports of an individual armed with a handgun. Upon locating the suspect, the officer issued commands, but the situation escalated when the suspect approached and opened fire. The officer was shot multiple times and rushed to University Medical Center, where despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was also killed in the exchange.
North Las Vegas Police Chief Jacqueline Gravatt expressed the department’s grief, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of North Las Vegas’ finest. Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, friends, and his brotherhood in blue.”
The loss has reverberated across the law enforcement community. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) K9 unit shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters at NLVPD. Terrible day for our community and his family.” Similarly, the North Las Vegas Fire Department and the Las Vegas Metro Police Wives organization have extended their condolences and offered support to the fallen officer’s family and colleagues.
Governor Joe Lombardo also weighed in, urging the public to join him in praying for the officer and his family. “Please join me in praying for this officer and their family,” Lombardo posted on X.
The somber mood was palpable Tuesday night as a procession of officers from multiple agencies escorted the fallen officer’s body from UMC to the Coroner’s Office. Dozens of officers from Metro, Henderson Police, CCSD Police, Nevada State Police, and the Clark County Office of Public Safety stood in solidarity, a powerful display of unity and respect for their fallen comrade.
This incident marks the first officer-involved shooting of 2025 for the North Las Vegas Police Department, serving as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily. As the community mourns, it also rallies behind the men and women in blue, whose dedication and bravery often go unnoticed until tragedy strikes.
