LAS VEGAS – According to officials, a North Las Vegas police detective shot and killed one of two canines that were assaulting a Shih Tzu at a city park Wednesday morning.

A detective and a city park employee heard a 65-year-old woman “screaming for help” at 9 a.m. in Seastrand Park because her leashed Shih Tzu was being mauled by an uncontrolled Pitbull and German Shepherd, according to police.

According to authorities, the woman became entangled with the dogs and was in “near proximity” to the attack while attempting to save her dog, forcing the detective to shoot the Pitbull twice.

According to authorities, the Shih Tzu survived the attack and was transferred to an animal hospital, but its status remained unknown Thursday. The owner of the Shih Tzu was unharmed.

The Pitbull was also taken to an animal hospital, but he died.

The Pitbull and German Shepherd’s owners will be prosecuted with two misdemeanor counts of dogs running at large, according to police.
