On an Overnight Hike in Zion National Park, a Woman Passed Away
LAS VEGAS – As reported by the National Park Service, a 31-year-old woman died while hiking the Narrows overnight in Zion National Park.
The cause of death, which may have been hypothermia, of the woman is still being determined.
On Tuesday, November 22nd, the lady and her 33-year-old husband set out on their hike. When rescuers arrived, they saw the man being assisted by other hikers down Riverside Walk. A shuttle bus driver was informed by other tourists that they had found “an injured man and a non-responsive woman” in the Narrows. More up the route, close to the Virgin River, rescuers found the woman. Emergency personnel rendered aid, but they ultimately concluded that she was beyond saving.
The guy was taken to Zion’s emergency operations center.
Their permission for the 16-mile top-down hike was in order, but the man reported that the couple had become “dangerously cold” overnight and was showing signs of hypothermia when they were rescued.
Approximately 1.5 miles from the northern end of Riverside Walk, a paved trail connecting the Temple of Sinawava and the Narrows, is where the man said they halted. The male claimed he kept searching for assistance on Wednesday morning while the wife stayed behind.
There were around twenty people on the search and rescue squad.
The National Park Service, the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are still looking into what happened to the woman.
