However, Pooya was not within a marked crosswalk, a choice that would have dire consequences.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., as Pooya ventured across East Lake Mead Boulevard on the south side, tragedy struck. A 2017 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by Jeffrey Paquette Jr. from Somerset, Massachusetts, was traveling westbound, approaching the intersection with North Pecos Road. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Pooya’s path intersected with the oncoming vehicle.

The impact of the collision left Pooya with severe injuries, prompting immediate medical attention. Emergency responders swiftly transported him to University Medical Center, where he received vital care for his injuries.

Authorities from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, after examining the evidence at the scene and gathering witness statements, determined that Pooya had ventured into the path of the approaching SUV. Tragically, his actions placed him directly in harm’s way, resulting in the unfortunate collision.

Despite the severity of the incident, the driver, Jeffrey Paquette Jr., acted responsibly and remained at the scene following the accident. Metro police clarified that driver impairment was not a contributing factor in the crash, providing some clarity amidst the distressing circumstances.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police’s collision investigation section has taken charge of the case, delving into the factors leading to this unfortunate accident. Their efforts aim to shed light on the sequence of events and ensure a comprehensive examination of the incident.

As the investigation continues, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety. Adhering to traffic regulations, including using designated crosswalks, is crucial to prevent such accidents and protect the well-being of individuals on foot.
