Rattlesnakes in Lake Las Vegas Prompt Dog Owners to Seek Vaccination

LAS VEGAS – Residents of Lake Las Vegas in Henderson have reported recent sightings of rattlesnakes in the area, prompting concern among pet owners. James Swanson, a local resident, called a professional company to remove a five-to-six-foot rattlesnake that had made its way behind a planter on his front porch in June. Swanson’s neighbors also encountered a rattlesnake at their front door around the same time.

The incident was particularly concerning for Swanson, as his three dogs were on the front porch at the time, only a couple of feet away from the snake. Although the snake did not bite any of the dogs, Swanson realized that his two-year-old lab could have been bitten if she had seen the snake. This prompted him to look into vaccination options for his pets.

Swanson learned that a rattlesnake vaccine is available for dogs, which helps them develop antibodies to fight snake venom and reduce pain. Although the vaccine does not protect against all snake bites, it can give pet owners more time to seek treatment in case of a bite. Swanson had all three of his dogs vaccinated, including a booster 10 days later.

It is important to note that not all veterinarians carry the rattlesnake vaccine, so pet owners should speak to their vet if they have any questions. Aliante Animal Hospital has information about dogs and rattlesnake bites on its website for pet owners to reference.

If you live in an area with rattlesnakes, it is important to be aware of the potential danger they pose to pets and take necessary precautions such as keeping dogs on a leash and away from tall grass or brush.
