Attention drivers and frequent flyers! If you’re due to renew your license or state ID in the next year, listen up.
The enforcement of the Real ID Act kicks in on May 7, 2025. This means, starting on that date, a standard license or ID won’t suffice for domestic commercial flights. You’ll need a Real ID instead.
Originally slated for May 2023, the program was delayed by 24 months, offering some breathing room. But time is ticking!
What is a Real ID?
Passed by Congress in 2005, the Real ID Act aims to enhance security standards for state-issued identification. A Real ID will be marked with a star or other indicator, differentiating it from a standard license.
What Documents Do I Need?
When renewing your license or obtaining a Real ID for the first time, you’ll need to bring specific documents to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. These include:
- Proof of your full legal name (birth certificate)
- Proof of date of birth (typically a birth certificate)
- Social Security number
- Two proofs of address (utility bill, bank statement)
- Proof of lawful status (citizenship documents for non-citizens)
Alternatives to Real ID
Don’t fret if obtaining a Real ID seems cumbersome. Here are some alternatives:
- Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (available in some border states)
- U.S. Passport
These options will also be accepted for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities, such as courthouses.
Traveling with Minors?
The good news: minors under 18 traveling with an adult companion won’t require a Real ID.
Why Real ID?
The Department of Homeland Security emphasizes that the Real ID Act strengthens security measures. These include:
- Anti-counterfeiting technology embedded in the cards
- Enhanced measures to prevent insider fraud
- Stricter verification procedures to ensure cardholders are who they claim to be
What About Non-Real ID Licenses?
While states can continue issuing standard licenses, these won’t be accepted at airport security checkpoints after May 7, 2025.
The Takeaway
Renewing your license or ID soon? Consider getting a Real ID to avoid any last-minute travel hassles. It’s a small step towards smoother domestic air travel experiences in the future.
