Recaptured Convicted Killer Currently Incarcerated in Nevada’s Maximum-Security Prison
LAS VEGAS – Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, who escaped last week in Las Vegas, will serve his time in a maximum-security prison.
Duarte-Herrera previously served time in Indian Springs, Nevada.
After escaping and hiding for days, Duarte-Herrera is now spending time at Ely State Prison.
NDOC says Ely State Prison is maximum-security.
Sheriff Lombardo said Duarte-Herrera had a “four-day head start on authorities” because the breakout wasn’t reported until Tuesday. The Nevada Department of Corrections confirmed Duarte-disappearance Herrera’s on Friday.
A bus station worker in downtown Las Vegas recognized Duarte-Herrera and notified authorities. Police said he was arrested as he boarded a bus to Tijuana, Mexico.
Southern Desert Correctional Center contains medium-custody general population convicts and two specialist programming units, according to NDOC.
Nicaraguan Duarte-Herrera was convicted in 2010 of killing a hot dog vendor with a coffee cup bomb at the Luxor hotel-casino.
