LAS VEGAS – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is in the midst of a recruitment drive to address the ongoing issue of burnout among 911 operators, a problem that is becoming increasingly common nationwide.
LVMPD Communications Manager, Catalina Latorre, admits that dispatching is a challenging role, requiring operators to work through difficult and emotionally taxing situations, with the potential to be dealing with a caller on what may be the worst day of their life.
The LVMPD is advertising for new staff on the side of the Allegiant Stadium and using social media to attract potential applicants.
There is a severe shortage of dispatchers, with Sheriff Kevin McMahill citing a 50% decrease in staffing levels. Despite this, Latorre emphasizes the immense rewards of the job and the sense of fulfillment that comes with knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life.
LVMPD dispatchers are offered therapy and counseling when needed to help them work through the stress of their work.
