The pilot who died in an accident during the Reno Air Races championship round on Sunday has been identified as an executive with a Henderson-based company.
Aaron Hogue, 61, of Paso Robles, California, was the managing owner of Hogue Inc., which manufactures weapon accessories and knives.
Hogue was piloting an L-29 Super Delfin when it crashed on lap 3 of 6 of the Jet Gold event on September 18.
Hogue has been flying planes since he was 16, according to his profile on racingjets.com. In 1987, he obtained his first flight license.
According to his website, Hogue’s aircraft, called Ballista, holds the Reno Air Races record for best lap speed of over 540 mph.
During a news conference on Monday afternoon, Fred Telling, the CEO and chairman of the Reno Air Racing Association, choked back tears as he spoke about what Hogue meant to the racing community. According to Telling, Hogue’s family was present during the events on Sunday and witnessed the tragedy.
Federal authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding his accident.
