Later this week, Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas will organize an opioid take-back day to help spread awareness of the risk of overdose.
On Saturday, October 29, starting at 10 a.m., the hospital will conduct its third annual “Crush the Crisis” day. to 2 p.m.
With drive-thru and drop-off options available, attendees will be able to anonymously discard unneeded or expired prescription medicine.
According to a news release from the hospital’s CEO, Alexis Mussi, “Southern Hills Hospital has seen firsthand the devastating consequences of drug misuse and abuse,” “As a leading healthcare provider in Las Vegas, we believe it is vital to increase awareness of this important issue and offer our community a safe way to dispose of medications to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.”
The hospital’s take-back day falls on the same weekend as the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day sponsored by the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more than 107,000 drug overdose fatalities in the U.S. last year, a rise of about 15% from 2020.
Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System, or SUDORS, data from Nevada show that the number of overdose deaths increased from 510 in 2019 to 788 in 2020.
