NEVADA – The Sparks Police Department has released the identity of the driver who died after causing two crashes, one of which involved a bicyclist, in Sparks on Sunday. According to the police, the driver was identified as Zayven Mergan.
The incident took place at approximately 5 p.m. on April 9, when Mergan was involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Prater Way and El Rancho Drive. After the collision, Mergan fled the scene in a stolen white Dodge Dakota truck. Witnesses reported that an adult male bicyclist was struck in the collision.
As Mergan was fleeing, the bicyclist jumped into the bed of the truck to prevent him from escaping. Mergan then crashed the truck a second time and fled on foot, with the bicyclist following him. The bicyclist attempted to convince Mergan to wait for the authorities, but Mergan threw an item at the bicyclist and ran away again.
Police stated that after a short distance, Mergan collapsed and was unresponsive when police and medics arrived. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. There were no signs of physical trauma that may have led to Mergan’s death, and no police intervention or force was used.
According to the Sparks Police Department, all indications are that Mergan passed away due to medical conditions. However, the investigation is ongoing as they wait for the medical examiner’s results. The police did not release any information on the condition of the bicyclist.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Sparks Police Department or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.
