LAS VEGAS – Thousands of people across all 50 states in the US gathered for marches on Friday to mark Transgender Day of Visibility. However, the marches took place as proposed legislation in many states aims for transgender rights and care during the legislative session. In Nevada, an estimated 200 people attended a march that began at the Las Vegas TransPride Center in Downtown Las Vegas and ended at the LGBTQ Center on Maryland Parkway. Sabastian Alcala, the program coordinator at the nonprofit Gender Justice Nevada, marched and spoke about his journey as a transgender man. Proposed bills in many states are aimed at restricting health care, education, and freedom of expression for the LBGTQ+ community. Nevada, however, has passed multiple protections for the LGBTQ+ community, including bills that would increase care for transgender people in healthcare and prison settings, but others propose to require athletes to compete based on the gender on their birth certificate rather than the gender they identify as.
