Multiple individuals were killed, and dozens were injured in a Tuesday night shooting at a Virginia Walmart, according to police.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., officers went to a complaint of a gunshot at the Walmart on Sam’s Circle. Upon arrival, they discovered evidence of a shooting, according to Chesapeake police spokesperson Leo Kosinski.
Over the course of 35 to 40 minutes, authorities discovered many dead and injured people in the store and dispatched rescue and tactical teams to provide life-saving efforts, he added.
He stated that police believe there was one shooter who is now deceased. According to Kosinski, they believe that the gunfire ceased when the police came. He did not have an exact death toll but stated that it was “fewer than ten right now.”
Kosinski stated that he did not believe police fired shots, but he was unable to determine if the shooter was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot.
Tuesday’s shooting brought to mind a 2019 incident at a Walmart in El Paso in which 22 people were killed by a gunman who, according to police, was targeting Mexicans. That day, Walmart did not have a security guard on duty.
Sen. Mark Warner tweeted that he is “sickened by the news of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Chesapeake Walmart.” Sen. Louise Lucas tweeted that she was “truly horrified that the most recent mass massacre in America occurred in a Walmart in my district.”
Chesapeake police announced through Twitter that a facility for family reunification has been established at the Chesapeake Conference Center. According to the tweet, this site is restricted to intimate family members or emergency contacts of anyone who may have been in the building.
Chesapeake is located around 7 miles south of Norfolk.
