Indian Springs, NV – A stabbing incident occurred at High Desert State Prison on Wednesday, resulting in two inmates being hospitalized. While the Nevada Department of Corrections spokesperson, Teri Vance, declined to provide specific details about the incident, she confirmed that it was unrelated to the recent death of inmate Jose Cruz.
Cruz, 26, was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder and was pronounced dead on Monday. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
The stabbing incident comes on the heels of a significant inmate transfer between High Desert and Ely State Prison. Earlier this month, nearly 2,000 inmates were moved between the two facilities, with High Desert transitioning to a maximum-security prison and Ely being downgraded to a medium-security institution.
It’s worth noting that three people were killed in a separate incident at Ely State Prison in July. The recent stabbing at High Desert State Prison underscores the ongoing challenges and tensions within the state’s prison system.
