LAS VEGAS – While Rose Zhang made headlines with her remarkable professional debut at the LPGA’s Mizuho Americas Open, another golfer emerged victorious at the Liberty National Golf Club on Sunday. Yana Wilson from Henderson claimed a prestigious title in an AJGA tournament that coincided with the LPGA event, further bolstering her impressive golfing credentials.
Reflecting on her experience, Wilson described the week as incredibly enjoyable and unique. Playing alongside professionals is not an everyday occurrence, making it an extraordinary and memorable week for the Coronado High standout.
The nation’s top junior players competed in their own groups for the first two rounds, and then the leaders had the privilege of being paired with LPGA players over the weekend. For Wilson, this presented a special but nerve-wracking situation, particularly when she played with her favorite player, Minjee Lee, during Saturday’s third round. Despite the nerves, Wilson’s performance remained steady, and she maintained her position at the top of the leaderboard. With the help of a modified Stableford scoring system, she secured the victory.
Wilson’s success in this tournament is likely to enhance her confidence as she gears up for the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach in July. Her previous triumph in the 2022 U.S. Girls’ Junior already earned her a spot in the prestigious event. Wilson expressed that playing alongside the pros made her feel like one of them, and she believes the experience contributed to her game’s growth and improvement.
