LAS VEGAS – The York Wildfire, which ignited in the New York Mountains near Nipton on Saturday, has made significant progress in containment efforts as it continues to burn along the Nevada-California state line. As of Tuesday morning, fire crews have managed to contain 23% of the blaze, which has already scorched an estimated 80,437 acres of land.
The fire’s trajectory has taken it northward to Crescent Peak Road, approximately 3.5 miles from Joshua Tree Highway, and it is about 35 miles away from the southern tip of Clark County. Federal fire authorities have confirmed that the blaze originated on “private land” within the Mojave National Preserve, where most of the vegetation that caught fire consisted of timber and brush.
In a press release, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) warned of increased fire activity on Monday evening and anticipates further escalation on Tuesday due to high monsoonal winds moving into the valley. Such winds can cause the fire to spread more rapidly and unpredictably, posing challenges for firefighting efforts.
Despite a brief downpour early Tuesday morning that temporarily moderated fire behavior, firefighters remain vigilant in securing containment lines along the Nevada border. The ongoing containment efforts involve a collaborative approach from local, state, and federal agencies, including the National Park Service, BLM, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, and Clark County Fire.
As of Tuesday morning, no evacuations are in effect, but Hart Mine Road from Walking Box Ranch in Ivanpah will remain closed due to the wildfire’s active conditions and ongoing fire suppression operations.
The public is strongly advised to stay away from the affected area for their safety and to support firefighting operations. The situation is closely monitored, and updates will be provided as the firefighting efforts continue to combat the York Wildfire.
