For narcotics trafficking and felony evading, a Reno man was sentenced to 25 years in jail. This punishment resulted from guilty pleas in two distinct cases.
Lonnie Wayne Rogers, 31, of Reno, was sentenced to a total of 25 years in prison, with parole eligibility after 10 years.
Rogers pled guilty in August to one count of trafficking in methamphetamine and heroin after the Regional Narcotics Unit (RNU) discovered 225 grams of methamphetamine and 119 grams of heroin during an investigation.
Rogers also pled guilty to one count of felony evading, the outcome of a further investigation into Rogers’ ongoing illegal activity. RNU investigators had obtained information that Rogers had used a forged check to post bail and was still selling drugs.
Detectives then used a sting on Rogers at a nearby hotel, after which he escaped and drove at high speeds through a fence before collapsing and surrendering.
Deputy District Attorneys Michael Vieta-Kabell and Stephan Hollandsworth asked the court to impose the hefty term in filings submitted with the court and arguments made at Rogers’ sentencing hearings. In justifying their request for more than a decade in prison, prosecutors cited the number of fatal drug overdoses in the community, Rogers’ criminal history and most recent crimes indicating he targeted the Washoe County community, and Rogers’ disregard for anyone he might have put in danger while fleeing the scene of his second arrest.
