NEVADA – The air quality in the Reno-Sparks area has deteriorated, reaching “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” on Thursday, with expectations for similar conditions throughout the weekend. The health officer for the Washoe County Health District has warned that between noon and 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the air quality index is expected to exceed 100.
These conditions can pose health risks for vulnerable individuals, including children, older adults, active adults, and those with pre-existing lung diseases. It is advised for these groups to consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion during this time.
The accumulation of smog, particularly on hot, calm, and sunny days, contributes to the decline in air quality. However, unlike wildfire smoke, smog levels can be mitigated through various measures. The Washoe County Health District recommends actions such as reducing driving, avoiding idling vehicles, refueling cars or gas cans after dark, carpooling, utilizing public transit, maintaining proper tire inflation, refraining from using gas-powered lawn equipment during the afternoon, and ensuring proper sealing of cleaners, paints, and other chemicals.
Taking these precautions can help alleviate the impact of smog and improve air quality, safeguarding the health of the community, especially those who are more susceptible to respiratory issues.
