Douglas County Urges Residents to Prepare for Another Winter Storm and Flooding

NEVADA – Due to localized flooding and excessive snow buildup in many parts of the county, along with an upcoming atmospheric river event on Monday, March 13, it is crucial to prepare for the next round of storms. The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners declared a local state of emergency on Friday, March 10, followed by a declaration of emergency from Governor Joe Lombardo. The County advises the public to assess their individual situations and gather the necessary flood preparedness and emergency supplies when safe to do so.

On Saturday, March 11, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the region will continue to experience snow impacts, especially for the mountains, with rain or snow showers for lower elevations this weekend. The next atmospheric river will bring wind, flood, and snow impacts late Monday into Tuesday and Wednesday.

To respond effectively to needs around the county, the County has activated an emergency operations center and a flood hotline. Residents can call 775-783-6038 to report any non-emergency-related flood concerns. The hotline is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. For flood emergencies, please call 911.

As more wet weather is on the horizon, residents should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible road closures. The County provides sandbag fill stations and other tips and resources to help residents prepare for winter storms, such as clearing gas meters of snow, avoiding the use of gas stoves or ovens to heat homes during power outages, and having the necessary groceries, supplies, and tools to clear sidewalks and driveways.

Douglas County urges all residents to stay safe during winter storms and have emergency plans in place. For the most up-to-date information, visit the County’s Flood Resource page and follow Douglas County on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
