WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – For two distinct offenses involving weapons and narcotics trafficking, a Sparks man was sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison, with parole eligibility after nine and a half years.
James Learren Brooks, 49, pled guilty in September to two charges of methamphetamine trafficking and two counts of having a handgun by a banned person.
The Reno Police Department (RPD) and the Regional Narcotics Unit both conducted investigations into the cases against Brooks (RNU). RPD officers traveled to a nearby casino in February to investigate possible drugs activity. Officers confronted Brooks, and throughout the course of the investigation, trafficking quantities of methamphetamine and a weapon were discovered in his possession. Brooks was freed from detention on February 18 after posting cash bail following his original arrest.
Following that, in April, RNU investigators launched a second investigation and discovered that Brooks was still selling drugs. After capturing Brooks and searching his home, officers discovered trafficking amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, and a weapon.
Deputy District Attorney Michael Vieta-Kabell claimed at the sentencing hearings that Brooks’ behavior was worsened by his ongoing drugs peddling after posting bail in the initial case. In addition to the threat Brooks’ crimes posed to the community, Attorney Vieta-Kabell argued that the sentences should mark the end of Brooks’ criminal career, which spanned decades.
