Governor Lombardo Advocates for Increased Funding to Support Students in Need

NEVADA – School choice advocates and officials gathered for a conference at St. Anne Catholic School on Friday to discuss funding for Opportunity Scholarships, a program aimed at assisting students in need.

Governor Lombardo is actively seeking to secure more than $3 million in previously unused COVID relief funds to bolster Opportunity Scholarships. This initiative takes shape against the backdrop of the governor’s legislative priorities for school choice not being fully addressed during this year’s legislative session.

The Opportunity Scholarships program offers need-based students the opportunity to attend private schools, benefitting nearly 700 local children.

During the conference, Governor Lombardo emphasized the importance of continued advocacy for school choice and Opportunity Scholarships, urging the public to join the cause and ensure the voices of the many Nevadans in favor of school choice are heard by legislators.

While the proposal garners support, some critics of Governor Lombardo’s plan argue that the allocated funds should be directed towards ‘accountable public schools,’ focusing on school safety, support programs, and staffing instead.

The proposal is set to undergo review by the Interim Finance Committee in their upcoming meeting scheduled for next Wednesday.
