Health Experts in Washoe County Recommend Getting a Flu Shot Before Influenza Season

NEVADA – Some health experts say this flu season could be the worst in years. The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) says that the season starts slowly and that most cases happen in November, December, and January.

Kevin Dick, the health officer for Washoe County, says that we’ve had a break from the flu because other viruses have been going around. After flu cases went up in the southern hemisphere, it was thought that the season would be bad.
Flu vaccines have arrived in Nevada and are now being given out at a number of clinics and health care facilities. Experts say that to be ready for flu season, you should get a flu shot before the end of October.

The executive director of Immunize Nevada, Dr. Sherilyn Duckworth, Ph.D., MPH, says that vaccinations are still a powerful way to protect against the harmful effects of both the flu and COVID-19. “We are telling everyone to make their appointment early so they can protect themselves and others from these risks.”

The WCHD is holding a community event to give out flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Both vaccines will be available:

On October 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
All residents aged 5 years and older
Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center Drive-Through
