Illegal Cockfighting Ring in Silver Springs Leads to 28 Facing Felony Charges

NEVADA – Lyon County deputies have uncovered an illegal cockfighting operation in Silver Springs, resulting in 28 individuals facing felony charges. The investigation, initiated after an anonymous complaint, revealed disturbing activities involving betting and observing roosters fighting one another.

On Sunday at 12:41 p.m., Lyon County Animal Services received a tip regarding suspicious activity at a residence on 10th Street in Silver Springs. The caller reported hearing a commotion and the sounds of roosters crowing. Animal Services and deputies swiftly responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered a large gathering of individuals and vehicles on the property. Deputies proceeded to enter an “Open-air” barn, where numerous people were assembled. Startlingly, the deputy on the scene witnessed firsthand the illegal activities taking place—hand-to-hand wagering and roosters engaged in fights.

In response to the presence of law enforcement, some of the participants fled the scene, while others were apprehended. Further investigation revealed a distressing scene, with 59 deceased roosters found in the vicinity of the barn. Authorities also seized approximately 50-75 live chickens and various implements commonly used in animal fighting.

Tragically, two of the seized birds were severely injured and later succumbed to their injuries. However, three hens were rehomed in an effort to provide them with a safe environment.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has launched an ongoing investigation into the illegal cockfighting ring. They are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward and contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at 775-577-5206.
