NEVADA – Lyon County officials are joining forces with community agencies and businesses to implement measures aimed at mitigating potential flooding along the Walker River in Yerington and Mason Valley. As the river approaches near moderate flood stage, the county is taking proactive steps to safeguard the affected areas.
In response to the impending threat, the Board of County Commissioners held an emergency meeting on May 20. During the meeting, the County Manager was instructed to implement emergency measures to reinforce the riverbanks in low-lying regions.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Lyon County has received invaluable support from Peri and Sons farms. The farm has provided essential materials and heavy equipment to bolster the stability of existing levees and dikes, effectively minimizing the risk of flooding. County Manager Andrew Haskin emphasized the significance of their collaborative efforts, stating, “Thanks to our collective work over the weekend, we averted significant flooding impacts in Yerington that could have emerged as early as Monday morning.”
While Lyon County remains proactive in its flood prevention efforts, residents are strongly advised to stay prepared and remain vigilant. The anticipated increase in water flow, reaching approximately 4,000 cubic feet per second, necessitates heightened awareness and readiness within the community.
By working together and maintaining a state of preparedness, Lyon County and its residents are actively combating the threat of flooding, ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in the affected areas.
