NEVADA – Valley doctors are on high alert as a rare brain infection called “Brain Abscesses” is being diagnosed in children at an alarming rate. According to doctors, the early symptoms of the infection are similar to those of the flu, but it progressively worsens over time. The outbreak has been especially prevalent in southern Nevada, with cases almost tripling since March.
Concerned parents and locals have expressed their worry about the outbreak, with many admitting that they had never heard of the condition before. Health officials have noted that the infection is not airborne, but rather spreads as a secondary infection caused by bacteria.
It’s still unclear why more cases of Brain Abscesses are being reported in children in southern Nevada. The Clark County health district has reported that most cases have been seen in boys around the age of 12, but they do not see a link between the infection and COVID-19.
Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Taryn Bragg with Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital has warned parents and pediatricians to be vigilant about a child’s symptoms, especially when they present with a fever. She emphasized that Brain Abscesses are not something that can be contracted by simply being near someone infected.
The Southern Nevada Health District has reported that out of the 14 patients who have received treatment, all have fully recovered. While the health district has reassured the public that this is a rare condition, they continue to monitor the situation closely.
