NEVADA – Reno and Washoe County declared a state of emergency on Friday ahead of a snowstorm predicted to hit the area on Sunday.

A new storm is anticipated to hit Northern Nevada on Monday and last through Tuesday.

The declaration permits communities to request additional resources and boost their staff, mostly for disaster response. The decision to declare an emergency was influenced by snow and water already in the region following a storm over the New Year’s weekend, according to a release from the Washoe Regional Emergency Information Center.

A long-lasting winter blizzard knocked out electricity to thousands of northern Nevada residents over the New Year’s weekend. Authorities closed major roadways in the Reno-Tahoe area that weekend due to reports of vehicle spinouts.

Washoe County and other organizations accepted storm-damaged tree limbs and downed trees for recycling.
