Nevada Department of Agriculture Urges Horse Owners to Vaccinate Against West Nile Virus

NEVADA – The Nevada Department of Agriculture urges horse owners to protect their horses from the West Nile Virus by getting them vaccinated. The virus can seriously impact a horse’s brain, spinal cord, and nervous system.

The NDA tests mosquito pools throughout Nevada to track diseases such as WNV, and the Animal Disease Laboratory reports the results to local health departments and vector control agencies. Using insect repellent, removing standing water, and reducing the mosquito population can help lower the risk of West Nile Virus.

Eliminating standing water around barns and homes and using deterrents can also help prevent mosquito bites on people and animals.
