Nevada Educators Testify in Support of Bills To Ease Restrictions on Exclusionary Disciplinary Practices

NEVADA – Educators in Nevada are pushing for changes to a bill introduced in 2019 that they say restricts disciplinary measures and creates safety issues.

The bill in question, AB168, introduced measures to reform student disciplinary practices, with a focus on addressing disproportionate rates of suspensions and expulsions affecting students of color.

However, educators claim it has made it difficult to discipline violent or disruptive students.

AB285 and AB194 are two new bills proposed to remove some of the restrictions on disciplinary measures such as suspensions and expulsions.

Some community groups warn against removing protections intended to keep kids in school and prevent them from falling into the criminal justice system.
