NEVADA – Assemblywoman and Majority Flood Leader Sandra Jauregui introduced Assembly Bill 355 on Monday, which proposes to raise the age requirement to purchase an assault weapon from 18 to 21 in Nevada. The bill comes after Jauregui survived the 1 October massacre in Las Vegas and has been an advocate for gun safety measures.
Jauregui was also involved in the passage of Assembly Bill 291, which banned bump stocks in the state. Other states have already passed legislation to increase the age requirement for purchasing firearms, and Nevada currently requires purchasers to be at least 21 when buying a handgun.
Supporters of the bill argue that young adults are at a heightened risk of attempting suicide and engaging in violent behavior. Therefore, strengthening minimum age laws for purchasing and possessing guns will help protect young people and the general public.
Assembly Bill 355 received its first reading on Monday and was referred to the committee on the judiciary for further review. For more information on how a bill becomes a law in Nevada, check out our related article.
