NEVADA – The Nevada Legislature has passed a proposed resolution that would amend the state constitution to guarantee the right to an abortion and other reproductive health care. SJR 7 passed through the Assembly with a 28-14 vote along party lines, following a previous 21-13 vote in the state Senate.
The resolution will be up for another vote in 2025, after which it will head to the 2026 ballot for Nevada voters to decide. If approved, all individuals would have a fundamental right to reproductive freedom, including access to abortion care.
Under SJR 7, Nevada would be able to regulate abortion care after fetal viability with certain exceptions. The resolution also ensures that no one can be prosecuted for obtaining an abortion or helping someone get one in the state, while also guaranteeing the right to make decisions on any pregnancy-related issues.
Advocates say the amendment will protect reproductive care, especially as abortion is currently legal in Nevada but without constitutional protection, meaning it could be overturned through a simple direct vote.
