NEVADA – The Nevada Wolf Pack athletic department and Grand Sierra Resort are scheduled to announce a major partnership during a Wednesday press conference.
While no details have been provided on what the partnership would include beyond it being a major private capital investment, sources familiar with the situation told Nevada Sports Net it will have a program-altering impact on the Wolf Pack basketball teams, specifically to those program’s facilities.
Nevada basketball has upgraded its infrastructure in recent years, including the addition of the Ramon Sessions Performance Center in 2017 and breaking ground on the $8 million Eric and Linda Lannes Basketball Building, a players lounge and locker room facility expected to open in fall 2024. The last piece of infrastructure Nevada basketball could stand to upgrade would be its home arena, Lawlor Events Center, which opened in 1983 and has fallen behind in maintenance over the years.
Expected to be in attendance for the press conference at LEX on Wednesday are Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve; UNR president Brian Sandoval; GSR owner Alex Meruelo, who owns the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes; Wolf Pack athletic director Stephanie Rempe; and Nevada men’s basketball coach Steve Alford, among others.
This could be a major development for Nevada basketball, which has been on the rise in recent years. The Wolf Pack have made the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons, and they are expected to be a contender again this year. A new or renovated Lawlor Events Center would give Nevada a major home court advantage and help them attract top recruits.
It will be interesting to see what details are revealed at the press conference on Wednesday. Stay tuned for more updates.
