Yerington, NV – The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office conducted a surprise search of student backpacks at Yerington Intermediate School on Wednesday, with police dogs being used to aid the search. The dogs alerted their handlers to several items, but it remains unclear if any of them were seized or if any students faced criminal charges as a result.
Vickie, a police dog that is “imprinted on marijuana,” was used during the search and alerted on several backpacks, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies discovered one vape pen containing an unknown liquid and a knife in one of the backpacks. The other dogs also alerted on other backpacks during the search, but it is not known if any illegal substances were found.
The sheriff’s office reminded parents that if controlled substances are used in their household, the odor can be present on most items in the house, including their children’s backpacks. The office also warned that if marijuana or paraphernalia was left in a backpack at any point, the odor would remain present.
It is not clear why the search was conducted or if any prior information led to it. The investigation is ongoing, and further details have not been released at this time.

Where's Chief Wagner? Maybe it's time for the City of Yerington to have the Lyon County Sheriff's Office take over as the primary law enforcement agency.
Keep up the good work, Sheriff Pope! I hope the LCSO replaces the YPD!
