CARSON CITY, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The Nevada Department of Corrections stated Thursday morning that two inmates at Ely State Prison are being investigated for mailing mail containing a powdery substance to a Las Vegas courthouse.

Last Friday and Monday, the mail was delivered.

“At this time, the substance from one envelope has been identified as a harmless substance, and the other has not yet been identified,” NDOC claimed, adding that “No injuries or symptomatic responses have been reported.”

An internal investigation will be conducted by the department, and any potential charges will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office.

According to NDOC Administrative Regulation 722.10, legal mail and communications sent by convicts are not inspected before they leave NDOC prisons.

According to Administrative Regulation 722.08, mail addressed to the Governor, Attorney General, or Secretary of State — the constitutional offices who comprise the Nevada Board of Prison Commissioners – is reviewed by NDOC employees before being sealed and dispatched.

“While the investigation into this incident is ongoing,” the news release noted, “NDOC will begin to review regulations and procedures for best practices going forward.”
