Reno Air Races Set to Bid Farewell with Final Event in September

Reno Air Races

NEVADA – After nearly 60 years in northern Nevada, the National Championship Air Races are set to bid farewell to Reno after the September event.

Organizers announced on the air race’s website that the final race will be held from September 13-17 at the Reno-Stead Airport.

The decision to sunset the event was made by the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority, citing concerns surrounding rapid area development, economic conditions, public safety, and the impact on the airport and surrounding areas. The 2011 tragedy, where a racing plane crashed into the grandstands, killing 11 people and injuring more than 60, was also a contributing factor. Despite this, air racing enthusiasts are inviting the community and race fans from all over the world to join them in sending off the Reno Air Races in style one last time.

The organization will continue discussions about the future of the races but remain grateful for its partnership with the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority over the years.

The final event is expected to draw more than 150 planes and pilots, along with several ‘hands-on’ displays and experiences.
