After a jury trial in District Court, a man from Reno was recently found guilty of one count of Possession of a Forged Instrument and one count of Uttering a Forged Check, according to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.
Last November, Reno Police Department (RPD) officers arrested Mark Christopher Conti (29), and the case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney (DDA) Matthew Merrill.
Conti’s case began in April 2021, when he approached a local check cashing establishment and attempted to cash a fictitious check for more than $2,500.
RPD investigators used video security footage and the identity Conti presented to the store employee to identify him.
He was eventually arrested, and the case went to trial. DDA Merrill stated throughout the jury trial that these sorts of financial crimes are not victimless. A faked check shows the victim’s hard work and sacrifice. Merrill submitted evidence such as video surveillance, company records, still images, and testimony from many witnesses to prove that Conti was the person who passed the forged check, despite the fact that Conti was wearing a mask at the time of the crime.
Sentencing is scheduled on December 1, 2022 in District Court Department 4.
