NEVADA – According to the National Weather Service, an atmospheric river is expected to hit the Reno-Tahoe area on Thursday.
This storm may result in heavy rainfall on top of an already significant snowpack, full creeks, and ditches, as stated by county officials.
In response, the Washoe County Community Services Department (CSD) has staged equipment, including backhoes, loaders, and trailers, for use in case of an emergency.
While ditches have been cleared, residents are advised to remove debris and garbage from their properties, as well as empty roadside ditches to prevent clogged drains and flooding.
CSD has prioritized life safety, maintaining clear access for emergency vehicles, and protecting public infrastructure. Walking into standing water or flooded ditches is dangerous, and residents are warned against doing so.
The county has taken measures to protect the Lemmon Valley area from rising water levels, constructing protective berms in certain areas, and installing high-flow pumps to manage water flows.
Crews have been monitoring ditches buried under several feet of snow and clearing them of debris to minimize flooding in known problem areas.
