NEVADA – The US Department of Agriculture has announced an investment of $197m in Community Wildfire Defense Grants, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The funding will be used to reduce the effects of unmitigated wildfires, with the Somersett Owners Association (SOA) in Nevada being the only grant recipient, receiving $2.34m with a matching contribution of $900k. The SOA established a Joint Fire Fuels Mitigation Task Force in 2022 to address wildfire risks in the upper Urban Interface areas.
The federal grant funds will be used to construct new fire breaks, reduce fire fuels, develop effective evacuation plans, and educate the public to reduce human-caused fire ignitions.
