The City of Reno Enhances Safety Measures with New Flashing Signs near Stead Elementary School

NEVADA – In a significant effort to prioritize the safety of students, the City of Reno installed new flashing signs near Stead Elementary School on Thursday morning. The strategically placed signs can be found on the northeast corner of Stead and Silverlake Boulevards, serving as a visual reminder for drivers to exercise caution and reduce their speed within the school zone.

The decision to implement these signs stems from the need to protect the numerous children who walk to both Stead Elementary and O’Brien Middle School. Jaimie Bowers, Principal of O’Brien Middle School, emphasizes the importance of ensuring their safety, particularly for middle school students who embark on their journey as early as 6:30 in the morning during the dark winter months. Bowers states, “The more attention we can bring that helps with safety and precaution, it means everything to us.”

By introducing these flashing signs, the City aims to heighten awareness among drivers and create a safer environment for students traveling to and from the school. The visual cues serve as a reminder to exercise vigilance and reduce speed in order to prevent potential accidents and promote the overall well-being of the students.

Funding for this project was made possible through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The City utilized the allocated funds from the ARPA to invest in these safety measures, prioritizing the welfare of the community and ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and growth.

With the installation of the new flashing signs near Stead Elementary School, the City of Reno demonstrates its commitment to enhancing safety measures and fostering a secure environment for students, parents, and staff members. These measures contribute to the overall well-being of the community and reinforce the City’s dedication to prioritizing the safety of its residents.
