The Nevada DMV Warns Drivers Not to Use Temporary Dealer Registration Placards Supplied Online
NEVADA – The Nevada DMV warns drivers not to use temporary dealer registration placards available online because they are often false and can lead to a hefty penalty.
DMV police sued a local car dealership after two unlicensed salespeople were cited.
Online ads selling in-state temporary tags for $200 led DMV officers to J’s Motorsports in Las Vegas.
The ad prompted investigators to audit 37 temporary placards without a dealer sale.
The audit found further irregularities, including unlicensed salesperson activity and abuse of Loan and Dealer allocated license plates.
J’s Motorsports’ dealer license is being revoked by the DMV.
Unlawful placard sales are fuelling an increase in vehicle impounds and charges, the DMV claims. One driver spent hundreds of dollars on illegal temporary tags over two years.
J.D. Decker, chief of DMV’s Compliance Enforcement Division, said fake Nevada tags are rare. Illegally altering temporary tags is prevalent, he added.
Decker said online temporary dealer placards are fraudulent. “Using phony placards might result in hefty tickets and vehicle impoundment. They’re not an official registration.
“Paying $50 or more for a false registration isn’t worth the cost of an impounded vehicle,” Decker said. “The owner must have a full registration to get their car back”
Online at dmv.nv.gov, owners with expired Nevada registrations can get movement permits.
