The Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza Is Now Open to the General Public
NEVADA – Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza is now open. Located west of the Sparks marina, it honors our fallen warriors.
When a patriot dies protecting our freedom, their sacrifice is far-reaching. Shandra Gipson’s grandfather served in Korea, Vietnam, and World War II and makes it at home.
Everyone gives, she said. Many individuals take sacrifice for granted these days. The military doesn’t have the same place in our hearts as it once did, therefore I think we should honor them and teach our kids how to do so. We must make this a priority in our society.
NVMP organizers have raised money to honor state soldiers since 2014.
Kristopher Dahir, NVMP president and Sparks councilmember stated, “If you don’t appreciate how much something costs, you’re not as grateful for it.” “This is the price of freedom, and I think it’ll make people stop and consider. Someone paid for it, so I’ll keep it.”
The memorial has 896 names of American servicemen and a spot for instructors and parents to understand the history.
Dahir said, “Up front, freedom papers.” “So you have your Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Constitution, all that together, and it’s thrilling ’cause it will be the first component, but then you get to go around and see the names of the men and women who actually lost their life.”
J.R. Stafford, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Sierra Nevada Chapter, remarked, “I’m here.” This memorial has 850-plus names, and there will be more.
The NVMP will memorialize the late Sparks mayor and co-founder Ron E. Smith with an educational walkway.
The project has 1,000 commemorative bricks. Bricks can include the Veteran’s name, rank, military branch, and station. These bricks will continue to be sold, with profits benefiting the plaza project. Waves of bricks are added. Bricks range from $100 to $1,000.
