RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – Ponds, rivers, and other bodies of water in Northern Nevada are beginning to freeze. The Reno Fire Department has advised us to avoid the ice.

Ice skating and ice fishing are dangerous activities in the Truckee Meadows. The weather in our location is simply not consistent enough for water to totally freeze over.

This week, when temperatures rise, is a good illustration. The ice must be at least 6 inches thick, and the only way to determine its safety is with a drill. While one section of the ice may be well-shaded and substantial, another 20 feet away may be thin and dangerous.

If you see somebody fall through, contact 911, according to Reno Fire Captain Kevin Joell.

“First of all, stay off the ice. It’s generally not safe ice in the Truckee Meadows to recreate on. If you do witness an animal or a person who has fallen through the ice do not attempt to go in after them. There’s a really good chance the rescuer will also fall through the ice and now we’re looking at multiple victims,” Captain Joell said.
