The Year 2023 First Survey Reveals Some of the Biggest Snowpacks Ever Recorded

RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – Following the recent series of storms that dumped a lot of snow in Northern Nevada, the first snow survey of the season was held on Monday.

“I think we all as we shoveled it knew that this was not powder, this was the classic definition of Sierra Cement,” said Hydrologist Jeff Anderson of NRCS.

The concern was how much of an influence the recent snowstorms would have on the snowpacks in our region. The snowpack in the Tahoe basin is at 217% of the median, which ranks it seventh among all years since 1981. The true effects, nevertheless, were felt further south.

“The Walker basin is up to 295% of median so that means they basically have 3x as much snow as would be typical for this time of the year.”

The locations that received a lot of snow weren’t only those near the Sierra. With a snowfall slightly under 244% of median, the Highway 50 corridor in the counties of Lander, Eureka, and White Pine has gotten the third most snow at this stage in the year since 1981.

Anderson cautions against becoming excessively enthusiastic, though, noting that we also had a lot of snow early in the season the year before a relatively dry first three months of 2022.

“We can certainly put a big dent in that drought deficit with the snow that will melt in the springtime,” he mentioned.
