NEVADA – Three Reno Police Department officers have been nominated for a RISE award for their efforts in rescuing two victims involved in a car accident in November.
Axon, the firm that manufactures the department’s body cameras, is presenting the prize.
Police Peralta, Muhlenberg, and Schmidt were performing traffic control between N. Virginia Street and Talus Way in Reno on Nov. 26 for another accident when a car drove through the roadway, just missing the officers.
The vehicle then exited the road to the east of N. Virginia Street, coming to a stop on its rooftop about 30 feet down the slope in a body of water.
When the three officers arrived on the scene, the automobile was rapidly filling with water. They then devised a strategy and collaborated to open the automobile doors.
They discovered the driver unresponsive, with his passenger struggling to keep his head above water. Muhlenberg and his colleagues were able to release the driver and drag him from the car.
The passenger has dragged up an embankment after being pulled from the car.
