On August 19, two people were killed in a rollover crash on I-80 in Elko County.
Around 5:10 a.m., troopers from the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of a crash on I-80 near state mile marker 396 (county mile marker 118 in Elko County). This spot is about 14 miles west of West Wendover.
According to preliminary investigation, a red Ford E-350 van was traveling east on I-80 in the left travel lane. The driver of the Ford drove off the left side of the road, onto the inside dirt shoulder, and then struck a reflective marker post for unknown reasons. The driver overcorrected to the right, causing the vehicle to reenter the roadway and eventually flip.
Both passengers were ejected because neither was wearing a seatbelt. At the scene, one passenger was pronounced dead. The other passenger was taken away from the scene and later died at the hospital. The driver was taken away from the scene with minor injuries.
The identities of those who died have not yet been revealed.
The Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.) is investigating the crash. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it is asked to contact Sergeant Mitch Payne of the NHP Elko Office at (775) 753-1111.
