RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – Beginning Thursday night, a 1-2 punch of winter storms is forecast to hit the Sierra and other mountain passes.
The first of the two systems is weaker and will bring less snow to the Sierra. The cold front is expected to pass over the area on Thursday night. Between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., the Reno-Sparks region might see a few flurries. Thursday to 3 a.m. On Friday, there was no accumulation.
Starting Thursday at 10 p.m., a snow storm alert is in place for Donner Pass and the Sierra crest. and will expire at 4 a.m. Friday. This excludes Lake Tahoe and Truckee.
Overnight Thursday, South Lake Tahoe is predicted to receive around 2 inches of snow. Donner Pass is expected to receive 5-8 inches of snow, while Truckee will receive roughly 2.5 inches.
Most of the day Friday will be quiet until the second, far larger storm system approaches late Friday night.
Winds from the southwest will increase up on the valley level Friday night into Saturday. Wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour are possible. The winds should die down by Sunday. Along with the winds, snow will fall overnight Friday into Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon highs in the 40s are expected to turn to rain or a winter mix. Saturday night into Sunday morning, snow will fall on the valley floor.
From 10 p.m. on Friday, a winter storm watch is in force. till 4 a.m. on Monday for the Sierra Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin The Sierra is expected to receive 30 to 40 inches of snow, with Truckee receiving 20 to 28 inches. Travel in the Sierra is strongly advised this weekend due to heavy snow and high winds.
Between Saturday and Sunday, the Reno-Sparks and Carson City areas could receive up to 3 inches of snow.
